As an integral part of the Beyond the Gates program, Lucy Karbowiak is beyond the office and probably unknown to many. Lucy spends most of her time at St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead, providing invaluable support to children from all backgrounds. Her professional background includes time with Out of Home Care, where she looked after young people who had been removed from their families. Before that, Lucy provided disability support in a group home. When asked what prompted her to apply for the role at CatholicCare, Lucy replied: “I loved what CatholicCare stood for as an organisation, and I was motivated by the potential to grow in the role and within the organisation.” Lucy also appreciates what the program can do for schools. And because it is a pilot program, she can shape it into what she feels it needs to be to best support young people. Lucy says the most enjoyable part of her role is working within a fantastic team at CatholicCare, and that she gets to make small changes in the lives of the children with whom she works. She also loves seeing the resilience of the children, and the way they challenge their feelings and come out on top. Outside of work, Lucy trains dogs and used to volunteer as part of a therapy dog program. She also loves photography.
If you see Lucy around, please say “hi”.
