How the Staying Home, leaving Violence Program changed our lives and saved my family
During the 16 days of Activism campaign, we are sharing stories from our Staying Home Leaving Violence (SHLV) program, highlighting support services available to women and children in need in our Diocese.
Below is a letter from a family who was supported by our team in the Staying Home Leaving Violence program.
Dear Leah and CatholicCare,
The kids and I just want to take a moment to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We first met you early last year when you were assigned to us through the Staying Home Leaving Violence program. What was the most awful and terrifying time in our lives became a journey filled with support, guidance, and care that I could never have imagined.
You always went above and beyond. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Whether it was helping with referrals, housing, finances, AVO breaches, security arrangements, court debriefs, child and school issues, support letters, parenting programs, and even making our Christmas special. You were there for us not only when we faced fear and uncertainty, but also when we experienced success and overcame challenges. The way you genuinely cared about us as people, was incredible and something I will never forget.
Because of your dedication, my children now have a stable home, a more confident mother who has broken free of the dark cloud that is domestic violence, access to counselling and opportunities that will help them heal and thrive and most importantly....they are SAFE. They adore you and I thank you with my whole heart for showing them kindness, consistency, and hope when they needed it the most.
Leah, your level of passion and commitment to helping people at their most vulnerable time goes beyond a desire to help others and is nothing short of inspiring. I want to pay forward the help we have received by studying and working towards being somebody’s “Leah” one day.
We are forever grateful to you and to the CatholiCare team for walking beside us through this terrifying and life-changing journey. We can now see the light on the other side.
With love and deepest appreciation,
Stacey and family.

What is 16 Days of Activism?
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign held from 25 November to 10 December. It raises awareness about gender-based violence, encourages community action, and promotes safety, respect and equality for women and girls.
Why CatholicCare Supports the Movement
CatholicCare participates in the campaign to stand with victim-survivors, highlight the impact of domestic and family violence in our region, and promote pathways to safety. By sharing stories, raising awareness and advocating for change, we reaffirm our commitment to helping women and children live free from violence.
