Reflections from the Loneliness and Isolation Symposium

Loneliness can affect anyone, but for many vulnerable people it has become an invisible barrier to wellbeing, belonging and hope. That challenge was at the heart of the recent Loneliness and Isolation Symposium hosted by Hunter Community Alliance, which brought together support workers, healthcare and mental health professionals, carers and community service providers from across the Hunter.

The symposium explored not only the growing impact of social isolation, but more importantly, how stronger relationships and connected communities can help address it.

Among those attending was John Sandy, Beyond the Gates Case Worker at CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning. As someone who works closely with students and their families, John found the day both professionally valuable and personally inspiring, taking away practical ideas to strengthen client engagement and foster meaningful connections.

One message resonated throughout the day: regular social interaction and person-centred support can make a lasting difference to a person's mental health and overall wellbeing. Backed by research and reinforced through real-life examples, it was a timely reminder that connection is not simply beneficial, it is essential.

For John, the most memorable moment came from a guest speaker who shared their lived experience of social isolation.

"Hearing the lived experience shared by one of the guest speakers, was powerful and insightful in understanding the real impact of social isolation on individuals and communities."

The symposium also created space for professionals from different sectors to exchange ideas, build relationships and learn from one another, demonstrating the very power of connection that the event sought to promote.

John also shared part of his own story, reflecting on his own refugee story. His contribution highlighted that the themes of the day - connection, belonging and community - are more than professional concepts.

Events like the Loneliness and Isolation Symposium remind us that tackling isolation isn't the responsibility of one organisation alone. It takes collaboration, compassion and a shared commitment to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to feel seen, supported and connected.
